Dad Essentials

The Expectant Father

The one to actually finish. Organized by month, covers what's happening with her, the baby, and you, in that order. You'll still skip ahead to your current month. Everyone does.

The Birth Partner

Everything you're supposed to do in the room, spelled out in advance. You won't remember any of it live. That's what the book is for.

The Intentional Father

Less about surviving the next nine months, more about the kind of dad you're trying to become. Heavier read. Worth it before you're too deep in survival mode to think about it.

Cribsheet

Bookmark this one for month two. Data over opinions on sleep training, feeding, and every argument you're about to have with a relative who's very confident and not a doctor.

The Whole-Brain Child

For when the baby becomes a toddler with opinions. Siegel and Bryson on how kids' brains actually work — the vocabulary you need for the meltdowns you can't reason with yet.

Dad Club Collective hat

The hat that tells everyone what happened before you say a word. Wear it to the grocery store. Watch strangers nod at you like you've joined something.

Tactical baby carrier

Front-carry, MOLLE-compatible, built for a dad's frame instead of retrofitted from a mom's. Yes, MOLLE webbing. On a baby carrier. You're welcome.

Dad diaper backpack

Doesn't look like a diaper bag. Nobody's putting this on a registry, which is exactly why it's here. Still has room for the diapers. Nobody has to know.

Wireless noise-canceling headphones

For work calls with a baby somewhere in the house. Sixty hours of battery, which is either overkill or exactly enough depending on how the week's going.

New Balance 408

Every dad ends up in these eventually. Might as well skip the phase where you fight it.

HelloBaby video baby monitor

No wifi, no app, no data collection. Just the monitor. If you don't want a smart baby monitor on your network — and there are reasonable arguments not to — this is the pick. Long battery, decent night vision, no subscription.

MomCozy portable bottle warmer

Warms a bottle in the car, at the park, or in the middle of the night without going downstairs. Not essential in month one. Genuinely useful by month three.

Noise-reducing earplugs

Not for sleep, for everything else. Take the edge off the noise without missing what actually matters. You'll still hear the cry that matters. That's the whole design.

Sleep mask

New parent hours mean sleeping whenever you can get it, not when it's dark outside. Your circadian rhythm's left the group chat. This helps a little.

Heated travel mug

Keeps your coffee hot through however many times you get interrupted before you take the first sip. Which, this month, is a lot.

Hatch Rest sound machine

Every parent I know has one. Eight hours of white noise, doubles as a night light, and the app control sounds unnecessary until you're standing outside a sleeping baby's door at 11pm and don't want to open it.

Field Notes notebook

Not the baby book. This one's yours, for questions, for notes, for whatever you need to remember before it evaporates. It'll evaporate. That's a promise, not a warning.

Portable charger

The hospital bag item nobody registers for and every dad needs. Outlets are always behind something. Every single time.

Moccamaster coffee maker

It's expensive. It's also the best automatic coffee maker made, full stop, and you're about to need genuinely good coffee more than you ever have. Not an upsell. A fact.

Cordless portable blender

Meals take time. You may not have a ton of that soon. Liquid calories are faster than cooking and do the job just fine.

Momcozy breastfeeding essentials kit

The pack of small things she doesn't realize she needs until she needs them at 2am. Nipple cream, storage bags, breast pads, cleaning gear. Buy it before the baby comes and remove one Dad-runs-to-Target trip from the schedule.

Foam roller

For the parts the smaller roller can't reach. Fifteen minutes on the floor beats another ibuprofen.

Resistance bands

For the guy who used to have time to go to the gym. You don't need a gym. You need fifteen minutes and a door.

Weighted blanket

Doesn't fix the sleep schedule, but it does make naps feel way better.
